Possible Amazons

The “Amazonian Times” exhibition also has fun features for all ages. We prepared different elements for the children’s audience and, in this room in particular, we have the water lily pogo stick, which is an attraction especially for children, and the Jogo do Carimbó (Carimbó’s Game), where the visitor can color a carimbó dancer and then watch them dance, also bringing this entertainment aspect of the rich cultural diversity of the Amazon, through its festivities, its music, dance, literature, cuisine… It is all portrayed in a room that changes color so that the visitor can also have a dynamic sensation of movement through the graphics on the wall and which are more or less visible as the color of the room changes due to the lighting.

When we talk about the Amazon, we immediately think of the region’s wealth of natural resources. But we also want to celebrate the cultural wealth of the Amazonians, and that is the purpose of this room, the #SomosAmazônia room.
Note that in the center of this room two large pieces stand out. A boi-bumbá (an Ox) and an Amazon river dolphin. They refer to very important festivals for the Amazonians. The ox, of course, refers to the festival of Parintins, which normally takes place in the month of June, in the interior of the State of Amazonas. It is a great popular festival, which has as its high point the dispute between the boi garantido, an ox of red color, and the boi caprichoso, an ox of blue color. Notice that our ox is all colored so as not to get into this rivalry.
The Amazon river dolphin, on the other hand, refers to Sairé Party, which takes place in Santarém, Pará.
These two pieces were produced by the artist Alex Salvador, one of the many Amazonian collaborators who helped us put together this exhibition.
Alex works at the Parintins festival and also collaborates with the development of pieces for Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival. In addition to the ox and the dolphin, he is responsible for the water lilies that decorate the entrance panel and for the pirarucu, anaconda and mushrooms that you can see in the corridor of the Tempos Amazônicos room.
After knowing a little more about the cuisine, literature and music produced in the Amazon region, follow us to the room Amazônias Possíveis, where we will invite you to reflect on future paths for this region.

In this module of the #SomosAmazônia exhibition, we can observe examples of the rich culture that we have in the Amazon region and that is being lost with the destruction of the ecosystem as Brazil is currently doing.
The traditional knowledge accumulated over several centuries is extremely important for an exploration of the biodiversity of the Amazon Forest and we have to stop the process of predatory exploitation of the forest to go through a sustainable exploration based on the traditional knowledge of the Amazonian peoples, being adequately rewarded for their knowledge, which is priceless for our culture and for the future of the Amazon Forest.
So, we have to change the development model that we currently have, value traditional knowledge and stop the process of predatory exploitation of the Amazon Forest.
