In Amazônia Acelerada, we wanted to portray the last 50 years of transformation of the Amazon territory. And there were decades of major deforestation, we saw this rate of about 20% of the degraded forest, arising from different actions, such as food production, opening of roads, livestock itself, illegal logging… But also due to the illegal mining, which take place in the Amazon region and which is generating not only environmental consequences (such as mercury pollution), but also affecting traditional populations, especially indigenous peoples, who are suffering a lot of violence. At the same time, we wanted to place a large river in the center of this space that would symbolize these transformations. This river, which starts clean, receives water from three affluents. And these affluents bring both these negative consequences, such as deforestation for food production, through the planting of soy and livestock, as well as the opening of roads, the impact of the disorderly growth of cities, through the lack of sanitation, and large infrastructure works, such as large hydroelectric plants that have a great socio-environmental impact. But at the same time, we also wanted to show solutions: how, through regeneration and reforestation, the forest can recover its ecosystem capabilities.
Visual identity is a very strong mark of the exhibition, with elements that are always connected to the theme of each space. Especially here in the Amazonia Acelerada room, which brings the main transformations of the Amazon in the last fifty years and the impacts that these transformations have on forest conservation.
These elements, they stand out. Here you can see that part of the room is gray. And this is no accident. This part covers about twenty percent of the room and draws a parallel with the twenty percent of the Amazon rainforest that has already been deforested. The green part represents the forest itself. And we also see the representation of the Amazonian rivers that run through this wall.
And, just as in the forest, it is also drawn by the bodies of water that are the rivers. And the elements in the form of rings along with the rivers represent the acceleration imposed by the unbridled economic development, which becomes the main factor of destruction in the region. In this virtual tour, you will also notice that the walls have signs that reveal symbols of biodiversity and also of the destruction of the Amazon.
One of the ways that exist to resist the challenges of the region is through art and culture. To learn more about this cultural production of the Amazon, continue your visit to the Somos Amazônia (We are Amazon) room.
The Amazon is an ecosystem that is undergoing a strong process of transformation due to public policies currently being implemented by the Brazilian government. Among the main factors of transformation are agriculture, the invasion of Indigenous Lands and public lands and illegal logging, in addition to mining, which actually contaminates huge areas of the Amazon with mercury.
Therefore, we have to stop this process of destruction of the Amazon ecosystem, because it, in fact, makes crime the main vector of transformation of the Amazon. Illegal activities are not, shall we say, tolerable in any nation that has a Constitution that must be respected, as in the case of Brazil.
Therefore, we have to reduce and change the direction of this “Accelerated Amazon” towards a process of sustainable exploration of the Amazon ecosystem, with economic activities that benefit the local population, the traditional populations and the indigenous peoples of our Amazon.
