Virtual Tour / Coccoloba gigantifolia
Coccoloba gigantifolia
The species Coccoloba gigantifolia was discovered by Carlos Alberto Cid Ferreira, researcher at the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA), in 1982. It was recognized by the Guinness World Records in 1997 as the largest dicotyledon leaf in the world. That leaf was 2.50 meters in height and 1.54 meters in width and it was found in the National Jamari Forest, in Rondônia, in 1989. It is considered a rare and endemic species from the Madeira River. The tree ranges from 10 to 13 meters in height and it grows an average of 9 to 14 leaves.
This example displayed here is 1.60 meters high and 93 centimeters wide and it was lent to the exhibit by INPA and by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
